In 1787, the MacAulays of Lewis were descendants of those of the MacLeods from Lewis who claim to descend to Aula also known as "Olave The Black" who in the 13th century was King of Man and the Isles. MacAulay's was a town on the Highland mainland that is part of Clan MacKenzie.
