Colin Campbell of Lochow, the ancestor of the Campbells of Argyll received a knighthood in the year 1280. The following chiefs were Earls Argyll before 1701 when William of Orange conferred a Dukedom to the 10th Earl. The 9th Earl was executed in 1685 due to his involvement in the Monmouth Rebellion. The Campbells played a significant role in the state's affairs and held high posts which included Hereditary Lord Justice General as well as Admiral for the Western Coasts and Isles of Scotland.
