Clan Campbell Clan Campbell was powerful in the West of Scotland and in Argyllshire. They were known by the name of Diarmid and gained the title Lord of Lochow in the 13th century. The following chiefs were Earls Argyll before 1701 when William of Orange conferred a Dukedom to the 10th Earl. He was executed in 1685 over his participation during the Monmouth Rebellion.
