Colin Campbell of Lochow, the father of the Campbells from Argyll received a knighthood in the year 1280. The next chiefs were Earls of Argyll as well. In 1701 William of Orange conferred a Dukedom to the 10th Earl. The 9th Earl was executed in 1685 due to his involvement in the Monmouth Rebellion. The Campbells were prominently involved in state affairs and held high posts which included the Lord Justice General's heir and the Admiral for the Western Coasts and Isles of Scotland.
