The land and title were granted to a patron to Edward 1 of England, who was later William de Abercromby suggesting a Norman source. The Abercromby title was transferred to a different portion belonging to the same family during the 17th century which was that of the Abercrombies of Birkenbog in Banffshire. This family was active in opposition to the Reformation and was a staunch supporter of and defending the Covenanters until the close of the 17th century at which point David Abercromby eventually conformed to the existing Presbyterian church. Sir Ralph Abercrombie became one of the most prominent military leaders in the 18th Century who was responsible for a large portion of Britain's victories in foreign wars as well as his military strategies having an influence on Duke of Wellington's battles to defeat the French.
